The following proposal is the work base of our business for the development of Geographic Information Systems and specific applications. Also on services, training and consultancy, is a specific methodology followed for each project depending on type and the client’s concrete needs. Our proposal is based on approved methods in design and implementation of Information Systems (IS).

CORPORATE GIS

It focuses on a rigorous definition of the structure of the Information System (IS) and the Data Base (DB), which is the appropriate approach for the development of a Geographic Information System oriented towards the management of corporate data. For example, an Information System for the management of cadastral data on a municipality.

SPECIFIC APPLICATIONS

Consists in the modeling and development of treatment or transformation of data applications, which is the usual approach when you’re trying to solve a specific problem with a Geographic Information System. For example, finding the best location for a new supermarket or banking agency. Nevertheless, it’s clear that a Corporate Geographic Information System usually requires some treatment of data, to obtain significant themes for the Data Base, while some Specific Applications require a stronger effort in the data breakdown and modeling of the Data Base.

“Success and failure of a Geographic Information System, most of the time lays on the strength of the original design.” --- GISITS

Procedure for the Development of a Corporate GIS

Planning Phase

We initiate with a study to define the objectives, opportunities and the feasibility of the project, which unravels in an objective evaluation of cost benefit, which allows the client to compare GIS advantages and priorities inside a great number of possible investments. As a sub product of this planning phase, the organization's top management will be involved and will thus count with enough information to make a decision about continuing or not the GIS development process.

Definition of the Information System Structure Phase

Once there is a favorable economic option, we move forward to the next phase, where the Information System Structure is defined. A detailed study of the data used by the organization is next, its quality and updating, the sources and interchanges necessary. We evaluate the existence of proper hardware and the future needs assessment, according to the objectives planned by the organization. We study the availability and necessities regarding software, as well as the training for the available human resources. At the end of this phase, there will be a clear idea about the structure desired for the IS, the data requirements, the hardware and software needed, as well the human resources available and requested.

Database Design Phase

On this third phase, we advocate to the design of the Database utilizing entity-relationship conventional formalisms. A process in which the data users of all levels of the organization are involved. Depending on the size and complexity of the application, it can be done through a successive approach of prototype applications or by an integral, exhaustive and rigorous design. We emphasize on this phase the functionality aspect of the DB, and complete documentation is prepared for it - Data Dictionary-. The final product is a well designed and documented DB, adapted to the perceived needs of the different types of users, completely functional, easy to understand, and with the capability to evolve and stay up to date, with the new needs of the organization.

Global Implementation Phase

The fourth phase corresponds to the Global implementation of the IS, includes the purchase or upgrading of hardware and software, the training of the human resources, the acquisition of new data or the adaptation to the current structure defined on the previous phases. The final product is a firmly structured Information System, with a Database of excellent quality, functionality and adaptability, which responds to the needs of the organization.

Multiple Consultancies

Because we try to give maximum usefulness to the product, the fifth and last phase consists on delivering a multiple consultancy service in aspects such as maintenance, training, updating* of hardware, software and data, all of which allows the Geographic Information System in its totality- including its infrastructure, logic and human resources- to be kept updated with the technological and conceptual changes that transform our every day society.

Vital Aspect:

One vital aspect is the transfer of knowledge between us and the client. Because of this, we recommend a systematic training approach, so the GIS can be both effective and useful. We supply training to the highest levels (strategic courses), as well as training based on your needs and designed for the end users of the system. (GIS Concepts and Software specific training).

Procedure for the Design and Development of a Specific Application

On this case, the planning (1), definition of the IS structure (2) and design of the database (3) phases, are condensed and the problem at hand is dealt with directly. We create a Conceptual Model of Treatments (CMT) required to reach the desired product. In most cases, the treatments are supposedly supported by the existing database, but often there is a need to go back to the modeling of the problem, the nature of the available data and evaluate the need of new updated data. Thereby, we can design a new model, or we can present the option to optimize the existing database of the organization. In contrast to the design of the database, where we use entity-relationship formalism in the modeling of data treatments which moves toward the specific product; we employ a conventional flow diagram that indicates the themes to interrelate, the required transformations, and the method of calculus employed. The Data Dictionary is done, on this case, with a dictionary of transformations and calculus procedures, in order to clarify the nature of all intermediate products and define the form in which its combination allowed to reach the final product. In the final product, the treatment procedures often have to be introduced as important entities inside the Information System of the organization, an aspect that must be indicated in the Database design, which gives an aggregate value to the modelization of treatments and design effort.

Quality Control

All phases are managed under our strict internal quality control policies and developed by a highly motivated and professional team.

RESULTS

As a consequence of following systematic procedures and with a continuous interaction with the client we secure: (on an application or project)

1. A successful application customized to the client's investment capabilities.
2. An efficient application that optimizes the use of present resources and takes advantage of the personnel's experience of the organization.
3. A functional application, which facilitates communication among the different individuals and departments of the organization, and between them and the outside world, that acts as a donor o receptor of data and information.
4. An updated application that uses the best available data and can forecast the updating mechanisms and its future needs.
5. A user-friendly application, because all the levels of the organization know and understand the structure in which the application and data are immersed.
6. A multilevel application, because there will be different levels and access routes to the data, according to the position of the user.

This program is designed to strategically support our clients and GIS/RS related organizations in maintaining up to date their GIS infrastructure (software, personnel and data*) giving them the ability to face and adapt to the fast changing technological and conceptual GIS industry. Our foremost concern is to give our clients a highly productive GIS application and products.
